Overview

The Work

Heat and frost insulators from HFIA Local 34 install, maintain, and repair insulation on pipes, boilers, ducts, tanks, and other mechanical systems throughout the Twin Cities, southern Minnesota, South Dakota, and western Wisconsin. The work keeps hot systems hot and cold systems cold — critical for energy efficiency and worker safety. You'll insulate HVAC ductwork in office buildings, wrap steam pipes in hospitals, and jacket process equipment in industrial plants. Local 34 members also perform asbestos and lead abatement work, removing hazardous materials from older buildings. Founded in 1913, the local has deep roots in the region and continues to grow as energy codes tighten and building owners invest in efficiency upgrades.

Day One as an Apprentice

Your first day you'll report to a commercial or industrial job site and meet your journeyman mentor. Expect to start by learning how to measure and cut insulation materials, apply vapor barriers, and prep surfaces for insulation. You'll carry materials, clean work areas, and observe how experienced insulators fit insulation around complex pipe configurations and equipment.
