Overview

The Work

Construction laborers from LIUNA Local 405 perform site preparation, demolition, environmental remediation, and general construction labor across Rochester and southeast Minnesota. With roughly 1,000 members, the local covers highway heavy construction, building construction, and specialized work like asbestos abatement and hazardous material handling. Rochester's Destination Medical Center project has created years of site prep and infrastructure work — foundations, utilities, road reconstruction, and demolition of existing structures to make way for new development. This is physically demanding work, but it's also the fastest path into the building trades with a shorter apprenticeship than most.

Day One as an Apprentice

Your first day on the job you'll report to a construction site and meet your foreman. Expect to start with basic site labor — moving materials, setting up barriers, digging trenches, cleaning up debris. You'll learn to operate small equipment like jackhammers and compactors while picking up job-site safety and construction fundamentals from the crew around you.
