Overview

The Work

Pipefitters and HVAC/refrigeration technicians from UA Local 539 install, maintain, and service piping systems, heating and cooling equipment, and refrigeration units across the Minneapolis metro and St. Cloud area. With roughly 1,600 members and 160 signatory contractors, Local 539 covers the west side of the metro — separate from Local 455's St. Paul jurisdiction. Day-to-day work includes installing process piping, fitting up HVAC ductwork and equipment, and servicing commercial refrigeration. Data center cooling systems are a growing specialty as the metro attracts more tech infrastructure.

Day One as an Apprentice

Your first day on the job you'll report to a job site and meet your journeyman partner. Expect to spend the first weeks learning job-site safety, how to read piping drawings, and basic fitting techniques. You'll start with physical work — carrying pipe and fittings, cutting and threading pipe, holding levels — while learning layout and installation from experienced journeymen.
